FAQ

Where are you located?

I’m based out of Tacoma, where I offer both art therapy & walk and talk therapy. My office is on 6th Ave (by the sign), upstairs between Bluebeard Coffee & State Street Beer Co. I also provide online art therapy to residents of Washington State.

How much is a session?

After the initial 80-minute intake session ($225), my standard rate is $150 per 50-minute session. I’m available to walk you through a free 15-minute phone consultation if you want to run some questions by me to see if we are a good fit.

Do you offer sliding scale?

Yes, I offer sliding scale spots through Open Path (space is limited). You can register here.

What kind of payment do you accept?

Credit cards, HSA (Health Savings Accounts), and cash all work great. Credit card payments are processed through TherapyNotes’ HIPAA secure platform. Payment is due at the end of each session.

What is your cancellation policy?

To ensure you don’t get charged in vain, I need to hear from you 48 hours (that is, business days) before our scheduled session that you will not make it. This will allow me enough time to schedule someone else during that time slot.

Do you take insurance?

I am a cash-pay or "out-of-network" provider, which means I do not have a contract set up with insurance companies. Please check with your insurance company to determine your out-of-network (OON) benefits. I can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement if you are interested, though a reimbursement is not always guaranteed. I am hoping to get paneled with Premera in the next few months — you are welcome to check in on that status via email.

If I want to see you, what should I ask my insurance company?

  • Do I need prior approval/referral from my primary care physician?

  • How many virtual and/or in-person outpatient mental health sessions are covered per year?

  • What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?

  • What is my reimbursement rate for an out-of-network Associate Mental Health Counselor and the following CPT codes: 90791 (intake session), 90837 (individual session), 90847 (session with a family member), 90846 (therapy with only family member of client)?

  • Where can I find the form necessary to submit my own medical claim for reimbursement?

  • What is the process to submit my own medical claims for reimbursement?

What does “LMHCA” and “ATR-P” mean?

LMHCA stands for Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate and ATR-P translates to “Art Therapy Registered—Provisional” (I think they shuffled the letters around to avoid deeming art therapists as “RATS”). In both cases, I am supervised, which is super helpful for me and as a result, hopefully benefits my clients as well.

Who supervises you?

I scored double time with two former Antioch grads, Carol Pendleton (LMHC License #LH60672449) & Ashley Mason (ATR-BC License #16-173). Carol supervises me as I work towards full licensure as a mental health counselor (dropping the “A” in LMHCA) and Ashley supervises me in all things art therapy.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy looks different for everyone, but research shows that those who consistently show up for a minimum of 3-4 months improve faster. For this reason, I strongly suggest meeting weekly for at least a few months (or until you reach your goals for therapy). Long term therapy is usually the case for more extreme cases.

I’m on the fence but I want to know more…is that ok?

I would love to hear from you! There is absolutely zero risk in a 15 min consultation call. I know there are basically unlimited therapists available these days and that I am not a bland piece of tofu (or a “blank slate”). If you end up wanting something that I cannot offer, I will do my best to help you find someone who does.
